Different types of boilers you can install in your home

There are several different types of boilers available to you in the UK, but which is best? It can be hard to know the differences between them, and which is most suitable, so we have listed the pros and cons of the most common boiler installs.

Conventional Boilers

Conventional boilers have the most components, requiring a water cylinder and two water tanks, so they are best for homes with a lot of available space. They can meet a high demand for hot water so are good for larger homes and bigger families.

Pros

  • Doesn't need good mains pressure.
  • Multiple appliances can be used simultaneously without affecting the water pressure.
  • Can easily meet a high demand for hot water.

Cons

  • Requires a lot of space so not suitable for smaller homes.
  • You can only have as much hot water as your water cylinder will hold.
  • Your water cylinder needs to be well insulated to avoid heat escaping.

System Boilers

System boilers are slightly more practical than conventional boilers, as they don't require water tanks. This makes them more suited to smaller homes, although they can still meet a high demand for hot water.

Pros

  • Doesn't rely on good mains pressure.
  • Doesn't require loft space for water tanks.
  • Can easily meet a high demand for hot water.
  • Multiple appliances can be used simultaneously without affecting the water pressure.

Cons

  • Not suited for very small homes as you still need a water cylinder.
  • You can only have as much hot water as your water cylinder will hold.
  • Your water cylinder needs to be well insulated to avoid heat escaping.

Combination Boilers

Combi boilers only require a boiler unit as they operate from the mains. This means they take up very little space so are good for smaller homes, although they will struggle to meet a high demand for hot water.

Pros

  • Very little space required.
  • Water is heated immediately, as and when it is needed.
  • Very efficient as water is not stored.

Cons

  • Water pressure will decrease when several appliances are used at the same time.
  • Relies on good mains pressure.
  • Will struggle to meet a high demand for hot water.
